Anabolic Steroids Effects – A Look at the Risks

For many decades now, athletes, bodybuilders, and fitness fanatics in general, have been using anabolic steroids for aesthetic and performance reasons. Anabolic steroids build muscle, they burn fat, they increase strength, they improve athletic performance, they speed up recovery, in fact, there’s not much they can’t do. There are however, certain risks and dangers involved, which is why we’re going to be looking at anabolic steroids effects today. If you plan on using steroids, you need to know the risks associated with using these potent drugs. Here’s a look at some of the negative anabolic steroids effects that you could potentially encounter when running a cycle.

Cardiovascular issues – Before we go any further, it’s important to remember that there are countless anabolic steroids out there, and as each type is different, so too are the side-effects. One common side-effect associated with many potent anabolic steroids however, is the fact that they can increase LDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol is harmful as it causes fatty blockages and build-ups in the arteries and blood vessels, which in turn can result in high blood pressure, heart damage, stroke, poor circulation, and an increased risk of a heart attack.

Feminization – Many anabolic steroids cause a process known as aromatization. Aromatization is basically a process by which testosterone in the body is converted into Estrogen. When this occurs, feminization occurs. Some common traits of feminization include: hormone fluctuations, fat gain, water retention, low sperm count, low libido, shrunken testes, and the next side-effect on our list, which is gyno.

Gynecomastia – Gynecomastia is another of the negative anabolic steroids effects associated with feminization, but it is so detrimental that we’re giving it its own section. Basically, gynecomastia, or gyno for short, is a side-effect of steroids where men grow breast tissue. Because of the excess Estrogen in their systems, they experience sore and tender nipples at the very least. More often than not however, gyno also causes their nipples to become swollen and puffy, and it causes them to store fatty deposits on and around the nipples. Worst of all is that gyno cannot be naturally reversed, so if you do experience gyno, the only way to get rid of it is to have surgery.

Water-retention – Again, not all steroids cause water-retention, but if you use the ones that do, boy will you notice it. Certain anabolic steroids such as deca durabolin, cause the user to retain water and to become bloated, especially in the face. It causes them to look puffy faced and to have swollen cheeks. The rest of their bodies also look bloated and watery, which causes definition and vascularity in the muscles to become hidden.

Masculinization – As you know, female bodybuilders also use steroids, and if you’ve seen certain female bodybuilders in the past, you’ll know how severe these anabolic steroids effects can really be. When women use androgens, it causes high levels of testosterone in their bodies, which can cause them to take on more of a masculine appearance. Their faces change shape, they experience excessive hair growth, their voices deepen, their clitorises enlarge, and they appear much more masculine in appearance. It sounds harsh, but sadly it’s the truth so there’s no point in sugar-coating things.
