Find Relief with These Helpful Natural Remedies for Diarrhea

If you have diarrhea and are looking for ways to help make it stop, you should click here for a list of different natural remedies for diarrhea.

Nearly 180 million Americans suffer from a bout of acute diarrhea every year.

If you've ever been hit by the worst kind of bug, then you already know that diarrhea is painful, embarrassing, and can make you regret eating even the most delicious of meals.

You'd love to be able to head to the pharmacy and pick up some medication. But, depending on the severity of your case, leaving home isn't always a possibility.

Perhaps you're just interested in natural remedies for diarrhea because you don't like the side effects of some medication.

In this post, we'll fill you in on the best – and blessedly effective – home remedies for diarrhea.

Rehydrate

When you have diarrhea, you can become dehydrated incredibly quickly. You'll also lose valuable electrolytes that give you energy and help to keep future bouts of diarrhea at bay.

While of course, drinking water is helpful, you may need to go the extra mile when it comes to dehydration. We suggest that you mix half a teaspoon of salt and 6 teaspoons of sugar with a liter of water to rehydrate quickly.

Drink slowly, as you don't want to make yourself sick. You can also opt to chew on ice if you're nervous about trying a rehydration solution.

Be a BRAT

Perhaps one of the best natural remedies for diarrhea is to be a BRAT.

No, we don't mean whining and pouting until you get your way.

Instead, we're talking about the BRAT diet – which, when eaten slowly and carefully during an episode of diarrhea, can help to stop the issue.

The BRAT diet consists of Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. We strongly suggest that you try it anywhere from 24-48 hours after diarrhea caused by another illness or by something that you ate.

Because the BRAT diet is meant to heal, not to provide you with the nutrients you need, don't follow the BRAT diet for more than 2 consecutive days.

You may also want to try things like bone broth or chicken broth to soothe the stomach and replace your lost nutrients.

Get More Probiotics

If you're consistently having issues with diarrhea, you may need to reconsider your diet (and we don't just mean abandoning that sketchy Mexican restaurant on your block).

You may need to restore your gut health by eating foods that are high in probiotics or taking a probiotic supplement.

Kefit, yogurt, sauerkraut and kimchi, tempeh, and even miso and kombucha are all excellent probiotics for diarrhea prevention.

Try These Natural Remedies for Diarrhea

These natural remedies for diarrhea are safe, effective, affordable, and you likely already have most of the ingredients at home.

If diarrhea persists, however, we strongly suggest that you make an appointment with a medical professional. You may have IBS, an undiagnosed food allergy, or another condition.
