Horrible Back Pain? 6 Ways Your Mattress May be the Cause

If Upper back pain is making it difficult for you to get through your day it may be time for you to trade out your mattress for a new one.

Sleep is one of the most important things every living being needs, no matter what stage of their life they're in. 1/3 of all adults don't get the sleep they need for a variety of reasons.

One of the most common is experiencing upper back pain. How can you find out if your mattress is not only causing you to be in pain but preventing you from getting a good night's rest?

Check out these signs that mean its time to chuck your mattress in favor of the rest you deserve.

1. Figure out How Old the Mattress Is

While it doesn't sound like a big deal, an older mattress can cause problems for your back. Just as you would replace a chair where the springs were poking through, you should do the same with a mattress that's old.

Once it no longer provides you with the support you need, it's time to throw it away. The general advice regarding mattresses is no more than ten years. After that, it's extended its life, and sleeping on such an old mattress can do more harm than good.

How often do you rotate your mattress? Folks don't think about this, but turning your mattress twice a year is good advice. Doing so allows the mattress to wear down evenly, and ensures you get the most use out of it.

For example, do you have a partner? Do you have a designated side you each sleep on or do you switch off? Does your partner weigh a significant amount more than you do?

If the kids come in the bedroom and jump on the bed, that contributes to sagging and overall wear.

Finally, many pet owners allow their dogs and cats to come and sleep with them every night. While this isn't a bad thing (and is comforting for both), it can sometimes cause more wear in certain areas than others.

If your bed has a lot of use from multiple people, animals, or even if you move around a lot at night, know that this means you'll notice sagging sooner. Pay attention when you do, so you can upgrade once it becomes a noticeable problem.

5. Decide if You Need Additional Support

Sometimes a good mattress alone isn't enough. You might need additional outside support in order to avoid upper back pain and other issues related to sleeping and your back.
