How Does Bad Cholesterol Affect Your Sex Life?

So you’re not in the mood to make love to your partner, and that’s perfectly okay. After all, not all people are always “in the mood,” which is normal. However, if you think your lack of interest in sex is lower than usual and is caused not just by tiredness and simple stressors, then it’s time to take a look at your cholesterol levels.

Bad Cholesterol

We know that diabetes can cause sexual problems since the high glucose levels in the blood can interfere with how we function sexually, but did you know that high serum cholesterol can also cause the same problems?

Below are some ways that high cholesterol levels can cause problems in your sex life.

Increases the Risk of Erectile Dysfunction

The higher your cholesterol levels are, the higher the risk of developing erectile dysfunction.

High levels of low-density lipoprotein result in atherosclerosis. This is a process by which the blood vessel walls thicken and harden due to the accumulation of LDL along the insides of these blood vessels. The more LDL that accumulates, the thicker and harder the walls become, resulting in narrower blood vessels. The narrower the blood vessels are, the more difficult it is for blood to flow through.

Atherosclerosis affects all arteries, including the arteries supplying the penis. For penile erection to happen, there should be ample blood flow into the area. The arteries will relax and open to allow the passage of increased blood flow, and the increased blood flow will then produce and help maintain an erection.

Because atherosclerosis causes hardening of the arterial walls and narrowing of the blood vessel, blood flow into the penis is restricted. You will not only have problems producing an erection but maintaining it as well.

Lowers Libido and Affects Arousal

High cholesterol levels also affect women and interfere with their arousal. When a woman is aroused, blood flow will rush to her pelvic region and genitalia. The increased blood flow not only heightens her arousal but also aids in lubrication during intercourse.

Atherosclerosis, because it hardens the arteries, restricts the blood flow into these vital areas. Not only does it diminish arousal, but it also reduces the production of lubricant and causes vaginal dryness. The loss of moisture makes sexual intercourse painful for the woman.

Statin Drugs are Not Helping Your Libido

Drugs

If your blood test showed that your LDL level is high, then your doctor will prescribe statin drugs to help control it. Statin drugs help control your LDL level by blocking a certain substance in your liver that is responsible for the production of cholesterol.

It should be noted that cholesterol is important for the normal functioning of our cells. It aids in the production of important hormones such as estrogen and progesterone as well as testosterone, cortisone, and aldosterone. Without these vital hormones, our body will not function properly. But as mentioned earlier, too much cholesterol in the blood is more detrimental than good since it clogs up the blood vessels, narrows the walls, and prevents adequate blood flow.

Now, statin drugs inhibit an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductaseor hydroxy-methylglutaryl-coenzymeA reductase, which is responsible for the synthesis or production of cholesterol. By inhibiting or preventing its production, cholesterol levels are controlled.

Unfortunately, one of the side effects of statin drugs is lowered libido. Some experts say that inhibiting cholesterol synthesis result in a reduced production of testosterone and estrogen, two hormones that play a vital role in sexual desire.

Hypertension and Sex

Hypertension and Sex

High cholesterol levels do cause hypertension, and hypertension also plays an ugly role in your sex life. In fact, chronic hypertension can make your sex life a bit challenging, especially if you developed heart problems due to your chronically elevated blood pressure.

Heart attacks can occur anytime. It can happen when you’re out doing your daily errands, while you’re working, and even while you’re resting or asleep. Sex is an activity that raises your blood pressure even though it’s just for a brief time and not to very high levels. Although the risk is significantly small at 1 in 50,000, the increase in your blood pressure could still put you at risk of a heart attack. In addition to the risk of heart attacks, hypertension also affects your libido and ejaculation and prevents you from enjoying sex with your partner.

While antihypertensive drugs can effectively normalize your blood pressure, they can also cause sexual dysfunction. Diuretics, for one, decrease blood flow to the penis and make it difficult to produce and maintain an erection. Furthermore, diuretics also deplete your body’s supply of zinc, which is important in the production of testosterone.

High cholesterol levels not only affect your health but also prevent you from enjoying a fulfilling intimate relationship with your partner. If you’re having problems with high cholesterol levels, it is imperative that you monitor them by getting regular lab tests. These days it is very easy to get lab tests done, you can actually order lab tests online like you would purchase electronics or airline tickets. So do get tested regularly, modify your lifestyle and embrace healthy living.
