Chia, a Pomeranian in Emporia, Kan., let four abandoned kittens nurse from her in August 2000. Chia, who had a 2-week-old puppy of her own at the time, adopted the motherless kittens after they were found by her owner’s boyfriend. "Her mother instincts took over," owner Kelsey Wilson said. "She herded them and got them to nurse."

Call it motherly instinct: A dog named Laska in Hamburg, Germany, has taken to two tiny wild boar babies, after both were found abandoned in nearby forests. Walkers separately spotted the pint-sized females, now named Alice and Emma, and dropped them with the Heckers, a local family known for rehabilitating ailing creatures. But this time, it wasn't the family members who nursed the animals to health; instead Laska, an Alsatian mix, stepped in and took charge.

A giant farm dog and a tiny piglet cuddle up as if they were family after the baby runt was dismissed by its own mother. Surrogate mum Katjinga, an eight-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback, took on motherly duties for grunter Paulinchen - a tiny pot-bellied pig - and seems to be taking the adoption in her stride. Lonely Paulinchen was luckily discovered moments from death and placed in the care of the dog who gladly accepted it as one of her own. Thankfully for the two-week old mini porker, Katjinga fell in love with her at first sight and saved her bacon.

Koko the gorilla who communicates through sign language selected a grey male Manx from a litter of abandoned kittens and named him 'All Ball'. Koko proved a wonderful pet owner and mother. She was very gentle with the kitten and treated him much like a baby gorilla, carrying him on her back and trying to nurse him. When she was in a playful mood, she would dress All Ball up in napkins or sign to him suggesting that they tickle each other, her favorite game. But then the kitten died. Koko adopted another kitten which is red.
