Magnificent Oil Paintings by Leonid Afremov. Part 1
Written by Emily
Sunday, 11 January 2009

Leonid Afremov is a Belarus born, Israeli modern painter who creates unique landscapes, cityscapes and figures using a palette knife rather than a brush to paint.

"I tried different techniques during my career, but I especially fell in love with painting with oil and pallette-knife. Every artwork is the result of long painting process; every canvas is born during the creative search; every painting is full of my inner world. Each of my paintings brings different mood, colors and emotions. I love to express the beauty, harmony and spirit of this world in my paintings. My heart is completely open to art. Thus, I enjoy creating inspired and beautiful paintings from the bottom of my soul. Each of my artworks reflects my feelings, sensitivity, passion, and the music from my soul. True art is alive and inspired by humanity. I believe that art helps us to be free from aggression and depression."

I really like how the color makes the lights look especially bright.
anon   | | 2009-01-18 17:34:20
it is because of the all that yellow, which is the brightest as percieved through human eyes.
sajib - 3 brightest colors in human ey   | | 2009-02-19 10:37:36
Not really yellow dude.A combination of yellow, orange and red (3 brightest colors)which have been quite perfectly used in here.

What a masterful artist you are. Your command of colour is genious....you are to be taken seriously.
Jacqueline Medina - bystander     | | 2009-01-13 13:51:04
I love the use of color and the almost cubed brushstrokes. Very unique style and a pleasure to the eye.
Jeannie Elliott   | | 2010-03-02 03:56:05
Just wanted to let you know that Mr. Afremov uses only a pallet knife - not a brush, and it does lend a uniqueness to the colors!
I actually found him after seeing his work in "Stumble Upon," and have since acquired 10 of his paintings! Nine Giclees and one original. My small, drab, apartment is now a vibrant home!
Come visit the auctions and the live Web TV. It is so easy to own a piece of valuable art for a fraction if you are savvy in the auction area! It is so fun!

My favorite is called "Winter." Ahhh
I have had nothing but great experience with him; purchases arrived better than I imagined! My cat still sleeps on the bubble wrap. haha!

Jarvis - Awww   | | 2009-01-14 01:32:55
Way too much happening here. It's too many colours and too bright. There isn't any real mood established, it's all shouted down by the excessive bright colours.

This person has an amazing use of texture and color in the paintings, the trees are particularly amazing since the shape of the leaves is defined with highly contrasting colors. thanks for the post, truly unique.

Sude Khanian - Very Talented     | | 2009-01-15 15:09:08
I am a painter myself, and as a painter i must say, well done!

I like how u use the magic of reflection and power of contrast to create something so beautiful.

However, I prefer the works in which you use strong contrast of shapes as well.

again, Nice Job. My hats off to you!
art critic #151 - Ugh, really?   | | 2009-01-15 15:46:25
Oh this is such an eyesore. It's too bright, too busy. It takes away from whatever is trying to be said. Indeed, the colors are pretty...but that doesn't make it good. The composition is delightful but the finished product...well, Kinkade should certainly watch out.
blondee - lovely!   | | 2009-01-15 22:03:31
I loved the intensity of the colors, using the whole range of the spectrum with varying brightness. And the texture made me want to take a lick of it! :)
ewww - disgusting!   | | 2009-01-16 01:51:45
you want to lick an oil painting?
dawn - really???   | | 2009-01-16 00:22:04
yawn!!! selfindulgent paintings that mach with the new livingroom....again???
Puh-lease! - This is pathetic.   | | 2009-01-16 01:55:00
I'm not an artist or a respected art critic, but it's easy to see that this is nothing more than disgusting kitsch. I don't know which is sadder: the "art" or the ridiculous sycophantic comments on this page.
Riles - We can see that you've never     | | 2009-12-31 04:10:10
It's quite obvious those who either can appreciate the effort that goes into these... or someone who has picked up a brush...

For the rest of you, get off your butts and try it, before you judge.

From someone who has explored mediums extensively: photography, charcoal, pastel, watercolor and oil...

This guy is most definitely more talented than many painters could hope to dream..
Paola   | | 2010-07-07 22:26:16
well is obvious you are not an artis or art critic,

Very nice touch, obviously knows how to use brushes, but too too loud for me. I don't feel the sense of mystery I usually seek in artwork.

They've got obvious talent, but almost every painting is of a person or people carrying umbrellas, walking on a mostly empty, well lit street at night. It's a great start, but I'd like to see more and different scenes.
fred     | | 2009-01-16 18:54:37
If only they were on velvet...
mijazma   | | 2009-01-16 19:40:58
i agree, using a knife instead of a brush can result in some amazing works of art. however, these are certainly not it. this is pretty much a tasteless tacky hack job. no art here.

They're pretty, but the images are meaningless cliches.
Ocean Sky - Sadly derivative   | | 2009-01-18 14:21:53
Totally traditional and derivative. We have seen too many thousand of these kind of repetitive "pictures" and easy mannerist technical obsession.
What to see real painting?

Pfin   | | 2009-01-18 19:19:37
Wow, pretentious comments galore!
I think they're gorgeous, but the painting subjects could have more variation. Keep em' guessing.
occasional artist   | | 2009-01-18 19:25:35
I think calling something "cliche" has become a bit cliche in itself. Cliches are usually that way for a reason- they are meaningful moments/thoughts etc. experienced by many. That doesn't make them less meaningful, it means we come to certain realizations because it's necessary.

anyway, I like the technique and the use of contrasting strokes to show distance. Imaginative.
Revolute   | | 2009-01-18 22:35:11
I think I just had a seizure. This is like that mass produced crap at holiday inn art fairs...just made with an impasto knife.
Terri   | | 2009-02-11 23:19:43
And I am wonder "Revolute" which museums or artshows are displaying your paintings and prints? I think Leonid Afremov is fabulous. I just purchased "Siberian Tiger" giclee. I just wish I had enough money to buy the original. I would love to meet the artist in person. I am sure he is a lot nicer than you!

yo masta   | | 2009-01-19 19:42:55
um, these aren't that good. they're all pretty much the same. if i didn't know any better, i'd say that they're all from one big one. i mean maybe if you were on X or shrooms or acid then maybe, but these really blow in all honesty. a high schooler could do this.

Mr. Afremov lives and works in Boca Raton, Florida, as he has done for many years. He travels the world, to be sure, and paints scenes from many countries, but his base is in the USA. Check out his web site, where he auctions original paintings daily.

Technically perfect but not inspired...still they make me feel happy.
Scat R. Brane   | | 2009-01-23 10:39:15
Since I see nothing but praise, perhaps a bit of critique is in order.

My 1st impression was also 'Wow!'. But (yeah, always that 'but' somewhere) it is the subject matter that makes it too much of a trick, that amazing use of colour. The scenes are too standard, almost turning the lot into kitsch.

Should the choice of subject be more personal, daring, challenging or whatever, that would change the entire perception I have of this technique.

Still standing is that I admire the effective use of those bright colours.

Okay, shoot me.

I find them emotive - I had my first anniversary in Paris. Isn't art supposed to be evocative or emotional?

intellectualising the colour and the brush strokes just renders us banal no! FOOD FOR THE SOUL.

keep up the good work

I love the way this art challenges the perceptions of what is "art" and what is pleasing to the eyes. The impact is very strong, with the use of colour and light reminicent of one of my favs, Cafe Terrace at Night
Vincent van Gogh, 1888.

I love the brilliance of this work. It bores me when folks attempt to display their "superiority" by trashing the talented work of others. It is so small - don't you think? I first saw Leonid Afremov's work on Ebay and have honestly considered buying one (as a cancer survivor, cash is a bit tight but the desire is there...). His work can be purchased quite reasonably. Keep up the great work Mr. Afremov. Don't let the bastards get you down. Your work is stimulating, intelligent and brilliant.

OMG, I love these... They are so beautiful. Man I wish I could paint like that. I wonder how hard it is for the artist to change the perspective of the colors... AMAZING.
Louann   | | 2009-02-26 00:46:27
I love the comments here. Oh, and I love the painting.
Bottom line is if he wants to make money, he doesn't need to please artists. He's already pleased himself,(or he wouldn't have painted this) and he can keep on doing it. And sell, sell, sell. Because it makes people feel happy. Most of the people who buy art are not artists!!
I would love to have this bright cheerfull painting in my home. It's color therapy!

I think mean people should keep their opinions to themselves. If they can't say something nice they should keep their mouths SHUT. What did you gain by hurting some ones feelings? Did it make you all feel like big shots? Well in my opinion and probably most of the other people on this sight you flap your gums like the the low life scum that you are. Mr. Afremov you are extremely talented and your paintings are beautiful. I LOVE the color.
JanyRegina   | | 2010-03-27 12:14:26
Did you see the critique of the artist because he is from a certain country.
tmo - love them   | | 2009-03-09 21:09:42
the artist uses ana amazing style of texture. i have atually painted a copy one of these before and it is difficult to pick up on this technique used. the colors used are awesome and make the picture stand out amongst others. these are some great peices of artwork.
bigdeal   | | 2009-04-10 18:11:52
Look at his art, then Daniel Wall's art. Complete copy. Afremov's description used to say "the founder of intense impressionism", just like Wall's description. Then one day Afremov removed it from every one of his profiles on many sites, including wiki. My guess is a law suit. Beautiful art, but mass produced crap at its finest. I own a few of Afremov's originals, but am sad to see what I discovered. A copycat. My paintings are probably worthless.
Anonymous   | | 2010-11-23 03:10:49
I think they are the same artist. Leonardo Zhang is another of Wall's seudonyms.

Not really yellow dude.A combination of yellow, orange and red (3 brightest colors)which have been quite perfectly used in here.

Actually its more of his amazing use of contrasting and complimentary colors. having blues and oranges touching and yellows and purples and greens and reds. Wow.

I like the use and contrast of colors in each painting, and that everyone is very distinct.

For me, art is a vehicle that takes me to another place in my mind. Maybe the place is from my past, perhaps it takes me somewhere that I have never been but have always imagined. If a painting has the capability to move me to that place inside of myself...then..that is beautiful. I think some of Mr. Afremov's paintings are simply beautiful because they speak to me. For those that do not feel that way...to each his own. That is what makes art...ART!

For me art is a never ending thing....as an ocean which has no limits....as the sky which is'nt restricted by anything....Art is my life....any kind of art means to me a lot....After watching these paintings I have understood that there's no other thing greater than art....To the artist of these paintings....Hats off to you....
Jaqui - Afremov Not Real?     | | 2009-06-17 15:45:38
Some guy last week went around posting that Afremov wasn't real on all the complaint boards. Just because you may have had an issue doesn't mean you make claims about someone. The art is unique and some people LOVE it and others don't and that's ok but the complaints are pretty funny! The Afremov family even responded on a few of the boards.

I am delighted by your paintings. I wish I could be your apprentice.
Carol Skaggs   | | 2010-05-28 17:12:30
Someone replied "if you can't say something nice then don't say anything." I thought this was supposed to be an honest critique of the paintings. I personally do not care for this style of painting therefore I cannot judge. I dabble a little in oil and this style does not "please" my eye. It almost appears angry. Some folks like it and some folks do not. Carol Skaggs

I absolutely love art with all my heart and its definitely inspiring to see an artist who puts so MUCH passion in the work he or she does and as a young artist at my age, which is ten I have a lot more to see. So anyone who likes art needs to find more and more inspiration every day!

really this is nothing new nor extraordinary. it seems both in subject matter and teqnique to be very much impressionist. kinda a steal in some ways

Tom - Wow, I can't tell the differe   | | 2011-08-28 06:38:45
I own and original Daniel Wall and this looks like the exact same style and brush/pallet strokes. It may be a ripoff from the D Wall style, but the guy has some serious talent.

I am so impressed! I love the use of texture and the play with color along with the dark and light. I love the boldness of each individual piece. All familiar colors, each painting a different story! I spend hours a day looking through different painting and I must say this is the first I have had to leave a comment on. BRILLIANT![/b]
