Is there any exact definition for the word "romance"? I don't think so...

A bunch of flowers from the person you love, the sweetest kiss, a tender touch, deep breathing...

This list can go on and on...

I would describe most of these as "contrived" (as opposed to "romantic") images depicting a sterilized ideal of romance. Romance isn't just lips close together, an arm around a body, or a smile; it is people actually kissing, actually embracing, and smiling genuinely as they do it.

And flowers? Flowers are a very small tip of the massive iceberg that is romance. Making chocolate-mint pancakes with your lover's name written into them before s/he wakes up - that's a little further down the iceberg. Romance is personal, present, and empathetic. These photos - they're just cheap Hallmark cards.

Still, the photography is what is romantic. The use of black and white? The shadowing...these photographs would be romantic even if the subject matter were not of couples.

This is how I view art.

Not only the subject matter but the artistry and technique.

I've loved b+w movies and photos that are clearly meant for b+w, even some that don't. What I mean is clarity and mood are enhanced in many b+w settings. The photos in this collection certainly are.
