9 Effective Tips to Staying Cool at Night

Is that night heat keeping you awake and disrupting your much needed sleep? Perhaps you’re reading this right now because you simply can’t fall asleep in your oven-of-a-room.

Quick… try some of these tips and let me know if they worked as well for you as they did for me?

1. Cool Down Your Linen

Your bed sheet and pillow covers should have no problem fitting into your freezer or deep freeze. Place them in there for about 10 minutes before you go to bed and you’ll stay cool for long enough to fall asleep.

2. Use a Breathable Pillow

Pillows have a significant effect on how warm or cool you sleep. Invest in a pillow that’s made from breathable fibres such as bamboo, latex or polyurethane. These types of pillows keep your head cool—and the rest of your body too. Outlets like Sleepify offer a wide range of breathable pillows at great prices.

3. Keep Curtains Closed During the Day

Are you the type of person who makes the bed and opens the curtains & windows as soon as you get up? This is a good habit. But did you know that keeping your curtains open during summer days will heat up your room significantly at night. If you can, keep the closed from about 10 am onwards to keep those sunrays out.

4. Use a Water Bottle

Water bottles can also be used for cold water! Fill yours and place it in the freezer for about 3 – 4 hours. Keep it under the covers while you sleep and it will release cold air (and a little bit of moisture) as you doze off.

5. Drink a Pre-Bedtime Glass of Ice Water

A medium glass of ice water before bed will keep your body cool while you sleep. This is also a very healthy habit to get into as it speeds up your metabolism and helps you lose weight.

6. Try a Salad Before Bed

High protein & high carb dinners will cause your body to emit heat while you sleep. Try some fruit or a salad and you’ll find yourself sleeping cooler at night—and feeling super refreshed and energetic in the morning.

7. Bamboo Mattress

Bamboo mattresses are an investment I urge you to make. I bought one two years ago and haven’t had a hot night’s sleep since. Bamboo is very breathable and won’t retain your body heat while you’re under the covers.

8. Minimise Electronic Presence

Have as few electronic items in your room when you sleep as possible. If you’re in the habit of keeping your laptop, phone and tablet in the room with you, you’ll suffer in the summer. Remove your electronics and your room will be cooler.

9. Spray Your Curtains

If the heat you’re enduring is a dry heat, adding some moisture to the air will help cool you down. Grab a spray bottle and fill it with water. Spray a fair amount of water on your curtains and open your windows for a natural aircon.

Conclusion

There. Now go try some of these tips on staying cool at night and don’t forget to thank me in the morning. Sleep tight!
