JEWELRY SPOTLIGHT: 5 CELEBRITIES WHO LOVE THEIR PEARLS

Pearls are known as the ‘Queen of Gems’ because they were once so rare, only royalty could afford them. In fact, in some places it used to be illegal for anyone but nobility to wear them at all. Pearls were so valuable in ancient times that a Roman general financed an entire military campaign by selling just one of his mother’s pearl earrings!

!  (Imagine what he could have accomplished with a whole pearl bracelet with lush big pearls.)  It wasn’t until about 100 years ago that the humble son of a Japanese noodle maker figured out how to make oysters produce pearls more or less on demand.

Pearls have long symbolized wealth and power, but they’re a perennial favorite for practical reasons too. They flatter every skin tone and they go with pretty much everything in your wardrobe. They don’t have a season and they never go out of style, so it’s no surprise that the world’s rich and famous always choose these precious jewels. From bonafide royalty to the Hollywood version, girls love to sport their pearls. Here are five ladies who know how to wear them with style:

Barbados-born superstar and fashionista Rihanna digs her accessories, especially pearls. Check out graphic artist Shusaku Takaoka’s modern take on a famous painting with Rihanna rocking an edgy Girl With a Pearl.

But left to her own devices, her attitude is definitely The more the merrier!

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie epitomizes classic beauty, right down to her pearl studs. Pearls go with absolutely any ensemble, from a suit to a sexy-casual cardigan. But this leading lady isn’t just another pretty face. Her humanitarian efforts are as widely-recognized as her acting talents.

Taylor Swift

We have designer Coco Chanel to thank for a lot of trends, including pearls. Chanel made them a staple for every fashionable woman’s wardrobe. As for modern trendsetters, T-Swizz may be a megastar, but she still looks like the Girl Next Door, in this case, sporting classic short-drop pearl earrings.

Michelle Obama

Former First Lady Michelle Obama embodies style and sophistication, so it goes without saying she loves pearls in every iteration: simple studs and drop earrings, single and multi-strand necklaces, short and long, delicate and chunky bracelets, Obama has ’em all!

Kate Middleton

Pearls have been the province of royalty for millennia, and the trend hasn’t stopped just because the average Jane can now afford them. In fact, this commoner-turned-noble wears them all the time. In this pic, the Duchess of Cambridge chose an elegant drop look with earrings borrowed from the actual Queen!

While priceless heirlooms aren’t within reach for most of us, pearls are still in the budget for just about everyone. You can never go wrong with these gems; they’re a must-have for everyone. Classic and seasonless, their subtle glow of nacre brings out the natural beauty in everybody. The only hard part is deciding which ones to wear!

FIVE REASONS PEARLS ARE A CLASSIC

In case the leading ladies above weren’t convincing enough, here are 5 more reasons to bust out the pearls:

1. They go with everything.
2. They come in a wide variety of colors and styles.
3. You can dress them up or down.
4. They mix well with other jewelry.
