From hundreds of years, this plant is fulfilling the needs of seed, seed oil, fiber (hemp), medical treatment, and for recreational purposes. Recreational marijuana produces effects like a feeling of relaxation, lightheadedness, reduced blood pressure, and increased appetite.

There are more than 120 different chemicals are present in the marijuana plant that is called cannabinoid, with each one having a different effect on the body.

When these marijuana chemicals or marijuana plant as a whole id used to treat various conditions and diseases, it is termed as ‘’Medical Marijuana’’.

Cannabidiol (CBD) and Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the main chemicals derived from hemp that is used in medicine.

Science of Cannabis:

The effects of 120 plus cannabinoids are mostly unknown accept the most potent psychoactive agent till the date, THC. Research on cannabis or cannabinoids is in early stages, but still, the study shows that medical marijuana doesn’t risk chemical addiction or overdose. Drugs containing cannabinoids show effective results in treating various medical conditions such as:

Weight loss and loss of appetite associated with HIV or AIDS.
Nausea, epilepsy, and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy.
Some modest benefits are also seen for multiple sclerosis and chronic pains.

How THC and CBD work?
CBD and THC are part of a group of substances called cannabinoids. These substances can bind with the brain receptors and cause an effective defence against the pain associated with different health conditions like HIV/AIDS and multiple sclerosis.

The attachment of these substances blocks the transmission of pain signals. The CBD part is more than just a pain receptor, and it also works on other signalling systems within the brain. Additionally, CBD has anti-inflammatory and protective properties.

CBD vs. THC:

Although CBD does not cause ‘’high’’, but it interacts with pain receptors present in the brain and exerts anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects.

The THC present in medical marijuana resembles with the chemicals called cannabinoids present in the human body naturally. THC stimulates the cannabinoid receptors of the brain and activates the reward system of the brain to reduce pain level. This psychoactive compound produces an elevated state of mind that is called ‘’high’’.

Most common conditions treated with medical marijuana:

Research shows that medical marijuana is comprised of both CBD and THC. The compound CBD does not create ‘’high’’ or euphoric feelings. The extraction of CBD from the hemp plant is helpful to deal with depression; anxiety reduces the side effects of chemotherapy, and help people suffering from seizures.

THC is the compound that causes a euphoric response, but users of medical marijuana use both the CBD and THC to get relief from different medical conditions. Here are a few medical conditions in which medical marijuana might be used as a treatment option:

  • Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS):
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a kind of progressive nervous system disease that affects the nerve cells present in the brain and spinal cord. This weakness of nerve cells causes loss of muscles control. Medical marijuana provides relief from the neurological symptoms, including seizures, involuntary movement of muscles, and muscle spasms.

Use of medical marijuana in the people living with PTSD shows reduced depression and anxiety level with insomnia relief.
