Creating Jackets Is More Sophisticated Than You Think: A Look into Jacket Making

First, the process will start with the designer. It does not matter if it is a low-end or high-end brand, all fashion labels have to think about both function and style when it comes to jackets.

The jacket should be insulating. However, it should be comfortable to wear. The jacket should keep heat in. However, it shouldn’t hold too much heat to avoid overheating.

Once the designer considers these things, the next items to think about are the material, color, and cut.
The filling is probably the most crucial factor to consider. It helps determine the cost and the heaviness of the jacket.

The Process of Designing the Jacket

For those who don’t know, developing a collection of jackets usually takes place over 1-2 years. The designer will have to consider the design of the jacket.
It’s crucial to consider every single element that can be found in a jacket. This includes a removable/fixed hood, drawcords, pockets, and much more.

Creating the Prototype

Once the designer is done creating the design, he/she can start creating the first sample. This is called the prototype of the jacket.

The purpose of the prototype is to see the construction of the jacket and create the needed adjustments if necessary.
After the designer determines the final model, he/she will create the sales merchant samples. The sales representatives will use these samples to show the finished products to the retailers.

The Retailers’ Presentation

While the elaborate collection features more than 20 styles in 4-5 colors each, the final production sometimes only shows a more or less insignificant portion of the presented jackets.
A couple of styles never make it to production. The merchants pick the styles they think best fit their clients. They pick jackets in bigger numbers.

Production of Accessories and Fabrics

After the presentation is finished, the retailers will start to order the jacket and the low MOQ jackets manufacturer will start the high quality and cost-efficient production.
Usually, the manufacturers start to weave the fabric at the same time as the sales meetings. Thus, manufacturers have to plan the quantities of fabrics needed to make the styles and jackets that the retailers choose.
For those who don’t know, it usually takes 1-2 months to weave the fabric and dye them. During this period, manufacturers will create other accessories for the jacket. This includes packaging, labels, buttons, cords, filling, zippers, and more.

Every single part of the jacket is sent to the factory to assemble them. This will produce the final product.

Difference for Insulation

When it comes to insulation, there are two primary types. The synthetic and down filling. Synthetic can be extremely costly to produce. Thus, it increases the overall cost of the jacket.
When it comes to warmth-to-weight ratio, synthetic cannot compare to the down filling. A jacket with synthetic insulation will weigh more to hold the same warmth.
On the other hand, down insulation is usually made of fluffy feathers found towards the skin of ducks and geese. It’s the most common filling for winter jackets. It is extremely great at keeping heat. Unfortunately, it does not hold up well if it gets wet.
In addition to that, mass-producing down filling requires a lot of birds. That is why a lot of people are against this type of insulation.


After selecting the insulation, the next step is to create the layers. The tailors, wearing face masks, will lay out a huge roll of fabric. Then, the tailor will use electric scissors to cut out pieces of the fabric.
The scissors are strong enough to cut several layers of fabric at once. Every layer of fabric is laid out. Then, the tailor will fill them with enough insulation.


If necessary, the tailor will cut out excess insulation. No one wants to purchase a jacket with the filling hanging out.
Every layer is individually sewn. Manufacturers can use an automated machine. However, some prefer manual labor.
However, there are occasions where they need to use a sewing machine. This is particularly true when it comes to bigger pieces of jackets.
Furthermore, you may notice the double stitching at the end of your jacket. The purpose of this is to hold in place the insulation and add additional durability. Manufacturers call this an overclock.
After sewing the inner jacket, the windbreaker is the next thing to produce. Usually, windbreakers are made from waterproof materials, such as nylon.
Nylon has small holes in the fabric. This enables humidity to escape. With this, people wearing it can stay warm without overheating. The holes are so tiny that water and wind cannot enter.
Finally, the tailor will sew together the windbreaker and the inner jacket. You’ll probably notice that there isn’t any seam through the jacket when you look at it closely. The reason for this is to avoid ruining the insulation.
The tailor will only stitch the inner jacket and the windbreaker at points where it is needed.


As you can see, the production of jackets isn’t as easy as you think. It is extremely complicated. There are a lot of things to consider.
