Games to Play This Holiday Season
Thursday, 22 October 2020

We’re just weeks away from some of the biggest holidays of the year. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year are all fast approaching which means we’ll be having time off work to relax and unwind.

At this time, many of us will be watching classic films like Home Alone and a Christmas Carol on TV while others stuff their faces with delicious dishes and sweet treats.

Many others will be turning to games, either to play on their own or with friends and loved ones. They’re a great way to have fun at home or on the go and there’s an almost infinite number of options to choose from.

So if you want to play a new game this holiday season, look no further than these.

Mini Motorways

Mini Motorways is a transport-themed puzzle game that requires you to build a road network that helps cars get to their desired destination.

You draw roads with your finger, connecting houses to shopping malls. It starts out easy with just a few buildings, but it slowly gets more difficult as more and different colours pop up. The colours can’t be mixed, so you’ll need to make sure they’re connected to the right place.

To add an additional challenge, you’re only given a limited number of road pieces to use, with new ones added every few minutes.

The game ends when the malls become too crowded because your road network couldn’t get enough cars there in time.

Mini Motorways is currently only available on Apple Arcade, but a version for Steam is expected soon.

PokerStars Casino

Games that you would expect to find in a casino are some of the most popular ones that are played today, despite being hundreds of years old. Having a game of cards with loved ones at Christmas has been a common activity.

PokerStars Casino brings you classic casino games like roulette and blackjack that you can play on your computer, smartphone or tablet. This means you have the convenience to play wherever you find yourself this holiday season.

It isn’t just those games either. You’ll find dozens of video slots with progressive jackpots and other fun options like Dream Catcher and three-card poker.

Call of Duty: Mobile

Call of Duty is one of the biggest video game franchises in the world. The first version was released way back in 2003 and was only available for PC and Mac. It has evolved over time, covering different periods in history (and the future) and with memorable multiplayer games such as Zombies.

In 2019, Activision and Tencent released Call of Duty: Mobile. It is a free-to-play game available for iOS and Android that manages to keep many of the elements of the franchise that made it popular.

It is multiplayer only, so don’t expect a single-player campaign mode. However, there is a selection of game maps from previous titles so you’ll get to relive the fun of past games.

As it’s a free-to-play game, there are microtransaction elements to the game, but these aren’t as offensive or aggressive as you find in other games.

Minecraft is the best selling video game of all time. This is partly thanks to its age (it was released in 2011), but mostly down to the infinite possibilities it offers players.

Minecraft doesn’t try to impress you with flashy graphics. In fact, its creators have deliberately made it blocky and simple, giving it a unique retro charm. Instead, it provides you with a blank canvas to build your own world.

There’s even an in-game programming language that allows you to make your creations interactive.

While you might start out constructing a simple house more experienced players have built everything from a working airport to whole cities.

You can find versions of Minecraft for almost every console, computer operating system, smartphone, and tablet sold in the last 9 years or so. This means you have the choice of playing it on the go or in full 4K.

There’s even an augmented reality version that you can use to bring your creations into the real world, though this is somewhat more of just a novelty.
