What's the Best Mac for Gaming? Choosing Your Gaming Setup

Are you trying to figure out what the best mac for gaming is? Read this article to learn more about choosing your gaming setup.

When you were going to school, you picked up a Mac for its performance capabilities. Now that you're done with college though, you want to finally indulge in some games! If you’ve been told that a Mac isn’t the best thing to play games on, this was definitely more than just a little disappointing to learn.

While it is true that Windows users have many more gaming options, there’s nothing wrong with creating a gaming setup with your Mac in mind. The first question you have to ask yourself is do you have the best Mac for gaming?

After that, it’s all a matter of optimizing your computer to perform the way you want it to. We can help you out with that! Check out this guide to learn all about gaming on a Mac.

Mac Hardware

If you haven't bought a Mac yet but are thinking of doing so, you'll need to take a look at the hardware. You need a Mac with a good graphics card and plenty of processing power if you want to do any gaming on it.

For example, the Mac Air and Mini aren't the best computers around for gaming. They have a long battery life but their CPU isn't the best. They only clock at around 1.1 GHz.

Upgrading

At some point in time, you could crack open your Mac computer and upgrade its parts as you see fit. It's unfortunate but that's no longer something that can be done unless you're working with a 27-inch iMac.

This being said, the best piece of advice we have for you is to go hard at the start. Go ahead and pay the extra money for a computer with extra memory space. The money you spend on it will be worth it for the performance.

Finding Games

Admittedly, the hardest part of Mac gaming is finding games that will run on it. You can head over to the App store but your selections will be limited, to say the least. Your best bet is going to be to download Steam.

Steam has a much larger selection than the App Store and if there's a Mac version of your favorite PC game, you'll be able to buy and download it. They even have a whole section dedicated to Mac users.

Another option is EA Origins. Many of their games such as "The Sims" are cross-platform. If you can play well with others then some MMOs like Final Fantasy XIV and World OfWarcraft can be played on Mac as well.

Best Mac for Gaming

Now that you know what specs to look for and know what your gaming options are, it's time to choose your computer (if you don't already have one). Here are a few of the best selections.

27-Inch iMac

The 27-inch iMac is going to be the best computer for the money you spend. It's not cheap but it's not the most expensive computer you can buy for gaming either. It will pretty much be able to handle any modern game you throw at it on the highest settings.

Unlike other Macs on the market, you can upgrade this one. We recommend budgeting to upgrade your graphics card in the future.

iMac Pro

The iMac Pro is a powerhouse that will run any game you need to run. The thing is, it might have a little too much horsepower.

It's more expensive than the 27-inch Mac and the gaming quality isn't that much different. Still, if you game and need a high-performance computer for stuff like video editing, the iMac Pro isn't a bad choice.

15-Inch MacBook Pro

If you're looking for a gaming laptop then you should go with the 15-inch MacBook Pro. It might not be as fast as the other two computers above, but it has more than enough speed to suit the needs of most gamers.

Optimize Your Mac for Gaming

Even the highest performing Mac will get bogged down by applications if you don't take the time to optimize it for gaming. You're going to need to free up space and keep an eye on your computer's performance.

Free Up Space

Downloading games is going to take up a ton of space on your computer. You've got to make sure you're ready for that by making room for your downloads. Go through your library to see if there's something you haven't used in a while.

If you haven't used it in over a year, it's safe to say that you can toss it in the trash. If you find that you can't part with everything, you can purchase an external hard drive for the extra space.

Pay Attention to its Performance

When your Mac starts to overheat, it will let you know. The whirling fans are a dead giveaway. When you hear that noise open up the Activity Monitor.

This will tell you what tasks are using up all your CPU and RAM power. Once you quit out of these tasks, the overheating should calm down.

Accessories and Extras

If you tend to game in public a lot, you should consider looking out for the best free VPN for Mac. You'll be able to have access to your online games and play them safely.

A trackpad has never been that helpful when it comes to gaming so if you're using a laptop you'll need to pick up a mouse. We recommend one with extra buttons on the side that you can map your skills to.

There are gaming keyboards with helpful extras like this as well if you want to maximize your gaming experience.
