3 Ways to Prevent Colds and Flus

We have all heard, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," which definitely holds true for preventing illnesses and diseases before they become unmanageable. Common colds and flus may not come to mind when discussing preventative medicine, but these annoying, and sometimes deadly, illnesses don't have cures. 1. Reduce Your Stress

Although reducing one's stress is easier said than done, it can be nearly impossible to avoid catching a cold when you are feeling utterly burned out and overwhelmed. Feeling constantly stressed can suppress your immune system and reduce the chances that your body will be able to fight off foreign bodies that cause colds and flus.
Some helpful tips for reducing your stress include taking a physical activity break every couple of hours during the day, performing breathing exercises for a few minutes, or reaching out to a loved one.

2. Exercise Often

It turns out that getting some physical activity throughout the day can actually boost your immune systems and help you fight off common colds and flus. Exercise can not only reduce the stress that can lower your immune function, but it can actually increase the number of immune cells in your body and build up your immune defenses.
Physical activity doesn't always have to mean going to the gym or running long distances. Activities like mowing the lawn with a push-mower, playing with your kids outside, or performing other household tasks can count as physical activity too!

3. Get Plenty of Sleep

Many of us pride ourselves on staying up late to meet a deadline or fit more working hours into the day, but allowing ourselves to miss out on sleep can also reduce our immune function and increase the chances that we will come down with a cold. It's not always feasible to get a full eight hours of sleep per night, but strive to get a little more sleep throughout the week if that is something you struggle with.
Nobody looks forward to cold and flu season, but fortunately, there are several simple steps one can take to reduce the chances that they will pick up the latest bug!
