Joey Klein, Inner Matrix Systems CEO, Tells How to Shift Your Focus to Create What You Want in Life
Tuesday, 18 May 2021

Have you ever felt like your efforts to create an outcome are spiraling out of control? It may seem like the more you focus on what’s troubling you, the worse the situation gets. There’s a reason for that, and in this article, Joey Klein, Inner Matrix Systems Founder and CEO, explains why things sometimes spiral in the wrong direction and what we can do about it.

Any time you attempt to create an outcome in your life, the most important thing to do first is name a vision that describes the mark you want to hit. Sure, this sounds easy enough, but nearly everyone gets it wrong without a bit of training - at least the first time.

Naming a vision that describes the desired outcome is essential to creating a successful map to achieving it. Your map, or to “map it,” is a mental construct that will identify what you must focus on to achieve the outcome your vision describes.

To illustrate, let’s say you want to lose some weight. It could be another outcome, but we’ll use that as an example. If you decide to name (or focus on) a result of “eat less and exercise more,” because that’s what everyone says you should do, you may find it very difficult to achieve your goal.

Depending on your current health situation, “eat less and exercise more” may be good advice and probably something you already understood. It is not, however, what you want to focus on. There is nothing inspiring about eating less and exercising more. The vision you name should motivate you to achieve your goal. In the end, you will moderate your eating habits and exercise more, but those are a means to an end, not the end themselves.

In short, if you focus on what you need to “do” to achieve a goal instead of what that goal will mean to you and how it will change your life, the inspirational characteristics of your vision will fade and no longer contain the power to motivate you.

Focusing on negative feelings, like “I’m too heavy to do what I like to do,” will produce more negativity. This can lead to being trapped in a loop as you watch your efforts to achieve your goals spiral out of control and eventually come crashing down.

Continuing with our example, the vision you name may be freedom to do the things you want to do. Or it may be the confidence to wear the clothing styles you like or pursue a relationship you are interested in. Focusing on these visions will keep you motivated.

Once you have named your vision to describe what you are trying to achieve - freedom, confidence, or whatever it is for you - align that vision with your feelings and emotions. This is the secret sauce, or where the magic happens. You want to clearly imagine how you will feel when you have achieved your goal and even each benchmark along the way. These feelings of emotional strength, joy, and confidence will become your focus. They contain the power to keep you moving through the difficult stages of your chosen path.

By fine-tuning your focus, moving it from the means to the end, you are well on your way to achieving your vision. There are still more steps, like training your mind, reinforcing along the way, and assessing your progress, but the first and most crucial step is to get your focus correct right out of the gate.
