Top punctuation rules for making error-free document

The following are some rules that you need to implement whenever you write anything for making the document error-free:
• Use apostrophes correctly: This is one of the most common mistakes that most writer commits. Apostrophes are mainly used to form possessives. For example, you need to use apostrophes in the possessives like - my shirt’s collars, this is Antony’s house, she is our school’s teacher, etc. You can also use apostrophes in contractions such as they’re, I’ve, don’t, etc.
Know where the quotation marks to be placed: In a quotation, you should place the periods and commas inside the quotation mark if they are not part of the material. But in case of the sentence within the quotation is a part of the material you should place the periods and commas outside the quotation mark.
Know the way to punctuate with parentheses: This is another confusing punctuation rule that most people are not aware of. If the sentence within the punctuation is large then you should put the terminal punctuation outside the closing parenthesis. But if the sentence within the parenthesis exists on its own then you must put the terminal punctuation inside the closing parenthesis.
Use of hyphen: If two or more words collectively serve as an adjective then the word should be hyphenated. For example, the meeting that was arranged hastily came on the heels of less-than-stellar earnings.
Distinguish between colon and semicolon: It is necessary to connect two independent clauses with the help of a colon or semicolon. But most writers do not know the exact rule when colon or semi-colon should be placed. The colon should be placed when the second clause expands or explains the first but if you find that the two clauses are merely related and the second clause does not follow from the first one you should use semicolons. For example, only a fifth of British have come with a passport; the majority of Americans have a passport with them.
Avoid multiple punctuations while ending the sentence: Another biggest mistake that most inexperienced writers use to do is to use multiple punctuations at the end of the sentence. For example, it is commonly seen that a period is put after a question mark or exclamation. You should never end a sentence with two punctuations.
Use of colon in the list: Colon is used for introducing a list but there is a rule for that, i.e., if the introductory text is a complete sentence then colon should be used otherwise you should not use any colon for introducing the sentence. For example, I need the following items: a boot, a jacket, a raincoat, and a knife. In this sentence, a colon is used as the sentence is a grammatically complete sentence. Again if the sentence is - Please bring a boot, a jacket, a raincoat, and a knife.
Use of comma for indicating all nonessential information: It is necessary to use comma in the sentence for nonessential information if it is possible to omit the explanatory matter in the sentence without changing its meaning. For example, you can write - India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, served from 1950 to 1962. But it will be wrong if you write - India’s first President Dr. Rajendra Prasad served from 1950 to 1962. Again you can write - the novelist Chetan Bhagat is very popular in India. But it will be wrong to write - the novelist, Chetan Bhagt, is very popular in India.
