The Increasing Importance of Automation, Virtual Care and AI in Healthcare
Monday, 21 June 2021

There are many changes that are taking place in the healthcare industry these days. One of the most significant changes that are happening right now is that automation and artificial intelligence are becoming more and more important in the field of healthcare. Of course, automation and AI are becoming more important in other fields, as well. Automation and artificial intelligence impact many parts of healthcare and particularly impact productivity in certain areas of healthcare. Additionally, virtual care is becoming more prominent as the connection between communication technology and healthcare grows even stronger. Here is what you need to know about these trends in healthcare.

Virtual Care and Healthcare

Virtual care has become much more important for healthcare, largely as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We can see this by the fact that not even one percent of those on Medicare conducted primary care visits via telehealth in February of 2020. However, in just a few months, that number increased to 43 percent in April of 2020. This trend appears to remain permanent since physicians, as well as patients, are accepting virtual care as a normal part of modern healthcare. Physicians will have to ensure that their virtual care is as good as their in-person care, since virtual care seems like it's here to stay. Those interested in going into healthcare, like via an online MSN program, will have to consider virtual care carefully as well.

Automation and Artificial Intelligence

There are a number of ways that automation and artificial intelligence impact healthcare. One of these ways is that automation can help physicians access electronic health records much more easily than they could previously. New kinds of interfaces for application programming and new methods of harnessing data are making it easier to generate and get data from electronic health records. This could benefit physicians in that they can get the necessary information from electronic health records easily. However, patients could enjoy better care, too, since physicians would have the right information at the best time and in the best setting.
Automation and artificial intelligence can also improve the billing process in the healthcare field, too. One way in which this is happening is that payers are trying to automate parts of the billing process, like pre-authorization. Using artificial intelligence in the billing process can allow a healthcare organization to generate bills faster. Organizations will eventually be able to give the bills to their patients before they even walk out of the practice or hospital.
Artificial intelligence, especially machine learning, is helpful for healthcare organizations in that it can help improve their staffing procedures. This can help the organization adapt the amount of staff they have to how many patients are going to the emergency room and to make sure patients have to wait less time for an ambulance. Organizations can use historical data from a number of different sources to know when to increase the number of staff when necessary, such as when the flu season rolls around. They can also know when they can decrease staffing when it makes sense to do so based on this data.
